Regardless of what day it is, I usually find myself following the same morning ritual: wake up, clear my email inbox, shower, french press a cup of coffee, watch or read the news, then get ready for my day. I’ve always thought it was a pretty solid ritual. Sure, I could probably get rid of the email checking, but it drives me nuts to see the little number bubble on the mail icon. Other than that, it seemed like a perfect morning ritual for me. That was until weekend 1 of yoga teacher training and my teacher introduced us to the acronym: CATS {caffeine, alcohol, tobacco, & sugar}. Essentially, it stands for all things that alter our state of mind, so my teacher suggested that we try eliminating one of these things while we’re in teacher training to see if we experience things differently than we normally do. Most of those are really easy for me since I don’t have them at all or I only have them in moderation. But, boy, did I feel resistance towards giving up caffeine. HOW COULD I GIVE UP MY MORNING COFFEE??? With all the resistance, I knew it was the one I had to let go.

Instead of coffee, I’ve opted for healthier caffeine sources. My favorite of these being: matcha. If you haven’t heard about matcha before, it’s a special form of green tea that’s grown in the shade to boost the plants’ chlorophyll levels and increase the production of L-Theanine. This amino acid slows the release of caffeine in your body leaving you with a relaxed alert feeling, compared to coffee which is usually a shock of caffeine to your system. I love that it’s a healthier alternative to coffee, so I’ve been playing with ways to incorporate matcha into my recipes. This matcha mint smoothie bowl is probably my favorite. It’s a great way to treat yourself in the morning and get a little bit of caffeine to kickstart your day.

With slow-releasing caffeine, this energizing matcha mint smoothie bowl is a great way to treat yourself in the morning and kickstart your day!
Serves: 1 bowl
  • 2 bananas, frozen
  • 4 Medjool dates
  • 10 mint leaves
  • 1 tsp matcha green tea
  • ½ cup almond milk
  • 1 kiwi, sliced
  • 2 tsp coconut flakes
  • 2 tsp chia seeds
  1. In a blender, combine the frozen bananas, Medjool dates, mint leaves, matcha green tea, and almond milk.
  2. Pulse until the mint and dates are well chopped.
  3. Pour smoothie into a bowl and top with sliced kiwi, coconut flakes, and chia seeds. Enjoy with a spoon!
